In March–April 2020 issue of the Journal of Pediatric Critical Care, Sharma et al. found in their cross-sectional study that 66.6% of the Indian children aged 5–14 years admitted with asthma had Vitamin D3 (VD3) insufficiency while 9.3% had deficiency. Serum VD3 levels were lower significantly in children with severe asthma as compared to those with mild, moderate, or intermittent asthma. They concluded that VD3 insufficiency was widely common in asthmatic children and correlated significantly with the asthma severity. Based on the following limitation, the aforementioned study findings and conclusion must be taken cautiously. Although India is a tropical country with plenty of sunshine, VD3 deficiency is worryingly prevailing among different age groups. The published data addressed that VD3 deficiency prevalence ranged from 84.9% to 100% among school-going Indian children. I assume that conducting a case–control study enrolling case group with asthma and age- and gender-matched control group instead of the cross-sectional study is a justifiable option to better reveal VD3 status in asthmatic patients and determine its correlation with asthma severity.
